About Greenville Japanese School
Greenville Japanese School is a non-profit organization dedicated to education and dissimilating Japanese language and culture. Greenville Japanese School was founded in the summer of 2006 and has since provided an environment to learn Japanese language and culture for people from Japan, people with Japanese heritage, and people who are interested in learning the Japanese language and culture in Eastern North Carolina.
Over the years, Greenville Japanese School has enjoyed different numbers of students and teachers. At one point, we had a regular class meeting almost every Saturday, where we had multiple classes of students in different grades from kindergarten age all the way to high school. We had a few dozen students who participated in our school’s meetings. We have participated in local international festivals, visited schools to share various aspects of Japanese culture such as origami (折り紙)paper crafts, shodo (書道), or calligraphy, and simply rented our Japanese educational materials.
Recently, we have a fewer numbers of students at Greenville Japanese School. We have been using our facilities as Japanese books and educational resources libraries. We have also held special event meetings. Some of the cultural events that we have hosted in the past include Calligraphy Day (書き初め、Kakizome), Japanese Card Game Day (かるた、Karuta), Bean Throwing (豆まきMame Maki) Tradition, Library Book Exchange (図書交換、図書整理会 Tosho-Kan Kai), Watermelon fun (スイカ割りSuika-wari), and other events.
